Hong Kong is one of two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the other being Macau. Hong Kong is a city-state, but because of Hong Kong's long history as a colony of the British Empire, the unique "one-country, two-systems" policy is applied, the city-state continues to enjoy a high degree of autonomy even after their return to China.

The name "Hong Kong" is an approximate phonetic rendering of the pronunciation of the spoken Cantonese or Hakka name, meaning "fragrant harbour". Before 1842, the name referred to a small inlet – now Aberdeen Harbour or hoeng1 gong2 zai2 "Little Hong Kong" – between the Aberdeen Island and the south side of Hong Kong Island, which was one of the first points of contact between British sailors and local fishermen.

Hong Kong is frequently described as a place where "East meets West", reflecting the culture's mix of the territory's Chinese roots with influences from its time as a British colony. Hong Kong balances a modernised way of life with traditional Chinese practices. Concepts like feng shui are taken very seriously, with expensive construction projects often hiring expert consultants, and are often believed to make or break a business.  Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
